Ismael has a secret. He´s been in his studio for two years trying to write his next novel, but he can´t produce anything but lifeless drafts. Karmele Jaio Eiguren (Vitoria-Gasteiz, 1970) has written three collections of stories: Hamabost zauri (Fifteen Wounds, 2004), Zu bezain ahul (As Weak As You, 2007) and Ez naiz ni (Not Me, 2102); three novels: Amaren eskuak (My Mother’s Hands, 2006), Musika airean (Music in the Air, 2010) and Aitaren etxea (2019); and a book of poetry, Orain hilak ditugu (Now They Are Dead, 2015). Her books have been made into films and plays and translated into numerous languages. Her short stories have been published, among other places, in the Best European Fiction 2017 and The Penguin Book of Spanish Short Stories (Penguin Classics) anthologies. The English translation of Amaren Eskuak, Her Mother’s Hands (Parthian Books), won the English Pen Translation Award. The novel Aitaren etxea won the Euskadi Prize for Literature, the most important literary prize in the Basque Country.
