Bilbao, mid-21st century: we all live in a developed democracy supported by technology, a biodemocracy, in which we decide every detail of our lives with our own votes, directly from our mobile phones: whether a strike can be called or not, whether music we don’t like should disappear from the market or whether a defendant in a possible crime is guilty or not. The system seems transparent and clean, demanding and guaranteeing the participation of all citizens, but Txetxu Urrutik discovers the opposite of this perfection when he is accused and arrested for the murder of his wife, Nere Poza. In the political tradition of utopias which become dystopias (with a clear trace of Orwell and Huxley), Asel Luzarraga has written a powerful fast-paced novel which manages to capture the reader, with a critical and ironic look that makes us think about the ills and trends of our society: what kind of families we are building, what kind of schools, television, entertainment, police, justice, prisons...
Asel Luzarraga was born in 1971 in Bilbao (Bizkaia, Basque Country).
He has a degree in Commerce and Basque Letters. After teaching for several years, he is now a professional translator. The publication in 2003 of Hamaika ispilu ganbil (Labayru) and obtaining the 6th Igartza scholarship pushed him to take writing seriously. Thereafter, he published the Basque-language novels Karonte, Mozorroaren xarma, Abaraska, Utopiaren itzalak, Gezurra odoletan, Inoren munduan, Bioklik, Bahiketa, Uzta garaia, Malthusen ezinegona, Katuak jandakoa, Esan gabe doa and Lurrean haziak. He has also published two collections of poetry: Denboran zatika and Bazter hautsiak. He has worked not only in the field of literature but also music, within the framework of the projects Punkamine, Trio Ternura, GorriBaltz and Analgy. After living in Chile and Argentina, he now resides in Bermeo (Bizkaia).
